I read an interesting article this morning and thought it might interest some of you. The article which featured on the UK’s NHS Choices website – a website run by the UK’s National Health Service – was entitled, “Can avoiding obesity stave off mental decline?”
It opened with the statement…
“Obesity ‘bad for brain’ by hastening cognitive decline”, reports the BBC, with most of the mainstream national media covering the same story.1
And centred around a large, long-term UK based study which…
assessed whether people were overweight, obese, or had other metabolic problems and then tested their ability in cognitive function tests at intervals over a long period of time.1
In reporting about the finding of the research it stated that…
The research found that cognitive decline over a 10-year period was similar in all participants, although participants who were both obese and had metabolic abnormalities showed the greatest decline.1

Hi Kevin,
Good article. The problem is compounded by the fact that so many of the anti-psychotic and anti-depressant medications cause considerable weight gain. Zyprexa being a perfect example. Very hard to tackle that except through constant vigilance over one’s weight and exercise and even then it is difficult.
Blessings,
Ellen
Hi Ellen,
Excellent point! And incidentally I wonder how many practitioners truly fully explain that when prescribing them?
Kind Regards and God Bless you
Kevin.
Very few and if they do, they put it in such a way that you have little choice but to take the meds.
Fascinating information, Kevin. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
Hi Candida 🙂
Good to hear from you and I am glad you liked the article.
Kind Regards and God Bless you
Kevin.
There is no safe way to avoid being fat. There is a social movement created by fat people claiming that trying to avoid being obese their entire lives destroyed their mental health. Since psychiatric medication also make people obese and we are not given information or choices about it this news doesn’t have much to tell us. I also think obesity is something not very well studied because they have preconceived ideas about always being a bad thing so other facts are ignored. The article is still interesting.
